Having to replace your double glazing probably sounds like an added expense you don’t need, however with the improvements in technology and how windows have become even more efficient over the past decade means that you can save energy and make a good investment in your home for the future. Double glazing doesn’t last forever and if it’s been awhile since your windows were replaced, you may notice some signs that they simply aren’t performing as well as they used to. But, what should you look out for as winter approaches to see if your windows need replacing? Creative Glazing, expert windows installer have provided a few pointers below.
1. Draughts
Draughts are one of the first signs that there’s air coming in through your windows and doors. At first you may not know where it’s coming from, but a common cause is the seal in or around the window being damaged or worn away. If you feel a draught from between the bricks and the window frame, that means the sealant around the window has failed. Draughts can also come from between the window frame and glass and this can be caused by the seal losing its elasticity. Sometimes it's a matter of replacing the seals but you may need to get new double glazing.
2. Chips, cracks or holes
Once you see a chip, crack or hole in the window, you know that it’s time to get it replaced. If you don’t get it seen to right away then condensation can build up and cause mould and other problems. If you don’t want to let the cold in, then call local double glazing installers to sort out new windows to keep your home cosy and warm.
3. Spot a leak?
It’s not common but sometimes water gets in and you’ll see on the window sill in the morning that there are little puddles. This is normally due to the seal on the window frame, which can be replaced. You can get in touch with reliable window companies who can advise on this. If the leak isn't due to a faulty seal, it may have something to do with blocked drainage, which can happen when there’s a build-up of debris. Your double glazing may be old and damaged, and in this case it’s best to replace it before leaks develop on other windows.
4. Condensation
If you see that condensation is forming on your windows, the first thing to do is try and solve it by getting a dehumidifier. If the condensation is forming between the two panes of glass then the seal is failing. This means that the warmth from your home is also seeping out so it’s time to replace the double glazing.
